Matthog the Ogre Pit Fighter
It's not every day you see a Jes Goodwin C23 Ogre for sale at a very affordable price, so I snatched him up pronto! His intial paint wasn't too bad, but very basic, so I stripped back what I didn't want and spent a day bringing him to life.
Matthog was the second round of Jes Goodwin's Ogre range released in 1986 and although named Matthog, he is often just known as the Pit Fighter.
The model was a true treat to paint. Not too difficult or fiddly, but with some fantastic detail, especially the scars. There's a lot to work with and the model lends itself to some creativity with the paints, so I really had a blast making him look grizzled and mean.
Especially fun was the detail around the neck, which I first painted up all red and scarred, but then overlayed it with the dark blue/grey wash to give the impression that stubble had grown over the old wounds, making him look haggard, but really tough.
I bloodied the club somewhat as well, but made the blood look old and stained, rather than fresh, giving the impression that this is his favourite and well used weapon.
This pit fighter champion is certainly not one to be underestimated.
