The Nightmare Continues

 Mounted Wraiths

What can I say? Who could resist a few very cheap, base painted mounted wraiths from the Nighthaunt range to add to the Undead army? Not me!

I had a blast painting these up from the usual light green base paint that everyone seems to favour these days, and matched the blue to white colour scheme to fit with the chainrasps that form the ethereals of the undead army.

I wanted to put the black skin colour back onto the nightmare steeds, firstly to match the dark cloaks of the riders, but secondly to create contrast between the skulls and the ribs.

I took the steeds from their oval sculpted bases, (which I may use later), and tranferred them to standard cavalry bases to fit the rest of the wight cavalry.

I certainly could have gone a lot further with the detail and shading on the mounts, but I also like the rugged and slightly rougher style too.

Matthog the Ogre Pit Fighter

 Matthog the Ogre Pit Fighter

It's not every day you see a Jes Goodwin C23 Ogre for sale at a very affordable price, so I snatched him up pronto! His intial paint wasn't too bad, but very basic, so I stripped back what I didn't want and spent a day bringing him to life.

Matthog was the second round of Jes Goodwin's Ogre range released in 1986 and although named Matthog, he is often just known as the Pit Fighter.

The model was a true treat to paint. Not too difficult or fiddly, but with some fantastic detail, especially the scars. There's a lot to work with and the model lends itself to some creativity with the paints, so I really had a blast making him look grizzled and mean.

Especially fun was the detail around the neck, which I first painted up all red and scarred, but then overlayed it with the dark blue/grey wash to give the impression that stubble had grown over the old wounds, making him look haggard, but really tough.
I bloodied the club somewhat as well, but made the blood look old and stained, rather than fresh, giving the impression that this is his favourite and well used weapon.

This pit fighter champion is certainly not one to be underestimated.
